About James A. Knowlton

Born in Aspen. Practicing law here since 1985.

I was born in Aspen, the son of a 10th Mountain Division soldier. Today I help families and small businesses across the Roaring Fork Valley, from my office on Midland Avenue in Basalt.

How I work

How I work

It isn’t enough to be clever in arguing the law.

Or to be a tough negotiator. A good lawyer uses the law to reach the best result for the client.

  1. Organize.Sort out what matters, and what can wait.
  2. Orchestrate.Bring the right people and papers together.
  3. Balance.Weigh competing interests toward a fair result.

The spirit in which I practice is to be relentlessly fair and reasonable, as the rule of law allows.
